One in ten Belgians who are currently looking for a house want to have their new home immediately secured. This is evident from a numerical analysis by real estate expert Immovlan. February remains a very burglary prone month. Last year, burglars entered 156 houses every day during this period. An alarm system can offer protection. But it’s certainly not the only way. Specialists of SDS Camerabewaking give five smart tips to keep the thieves’ guild out of this crocus holiday.
1. Bring thieves into doubt
A thief who starts to doubt, often walks fast. That’s why it’s a good idea to make the house look inhabited. Lights with a sensor that flare at the slightest movement, so-called frightening lights, are often sufficient. Burglars don’t like to be in the spotlight. A timer on the lights in the house can also help if you are absent for a longer period of time. In addition, your family can ask you to remove the mail or occasionally park their car in your driveway.
2. Use your common sense, also online
It seems so simple, but many Belgians continue to sin against it. Lock your garage door and don’t leave anything valuable, such as a laptop, jewel or game computer, in sight, let alone cash. Also pay close attention to what you share on social media, such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. It is better to share your best snapshots with everyone after the holiday than during it.
3. Mount extra security locks
You can add extra security locks to the outside doors. A multi-point lock is undoubtedly a must. Extra window locks are also a good investment. 4. The neighbor, your friend
The police are your friend, but your neighbour is even more so. Especially if your house is hard to see and maybe a bit in the back. If you are leaving your house for a long time, be sure to ask your neighbours if they keep an extra eye on you and maybe walk around the house regularly. The more a thief gets the idea that the neighbourhood has ‘eyes’, the less inclined he is to make an unwanted visit.
5. Outdoor cameras work
When thieves notice these cameras, this is often enough to make them choose an easier option. Even fake cameras, in combination with blinkers, can often suffice.
